Top 5 Things to Do in Winter for Fishermen: Stay Active and Prepared for the Warmer Months

Top 5 Things to Do in Winter for a Fisherman
Winter can be a tough season for fishermen, as the cold weather and shorter days can make it harder to get out on the water. However, there are still plenty of things that fishermen can do to stay active and prepare for the warmer months ahead. Here are our top 5 suggestions for things to do in the winter as a fisherman:
  1. Go ice fishing. If you live in an area where the lakes freeze over in the winter, ice fishing can be a fun and exciting way to catch fish. Make sure to properly prepare for the cold weather and check the ice thickness before venturing out.
  2. Attend fishing trade shows and conventions. Many cities host fishing trade shows and conventions during the winter months, giving you the chance to see the latest gear and techniques, and meet other fishermen.
  3. Start tying your own flies. Fly fishing can be a rewarding and challenging way to catch fish, and tying your own flies allows you to customize your lures to your specific fishing conditions. There are plenty of resources available online to help you get started.
  4. Practice your casting. Even if you can't get out on the water, you can still work on your casting skills in the winter. Set up a practice area in your backyard or garage and spend some time honing your technique.
  5. Plan your fishing trips for the year. Winter is a great time to research new fishing destinations and start planning your trips for the coming year. Look into different types of fish, regulations, and the best times to visit.

Kayak Fishing Essentials

12/16/2020

My buddy Edward of Hook To Cook asked me about essential things you would need for kayak fishing.  I will share items that i make sure I have with me whenever I'm on the kayak.  Safety is number one, so make sure you have all your safety items.

I created a list of kayak fishing essentials. Here's a direct link to a few items on my influencers page www.amazon.com/shop/tomytekoutdoors?listId=2X85NLN2PXKRC

Electronics are pretty essential when it comes to fishing.  A good fish finder is a great tool  to help you make the best use of your time on the water.  Humminbird has come out with MegaLive, which will compete with Garmin's Livescope.  The new Helix GN4 will support MegaLive.  Here 's a link  to the smallest version, the HELIX 8 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G4N  bit.ly/3gRog4y

Here is a part list for making a PVC prop sticking for kayak crabbing.  This is made of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe. I will have a video on my YouTube Channel, showing how to build this. I'll update this with a link to the video when it is finished.
Part List
  • 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe - enough to build your rocket launcher.  I bought a 10 foot piece.
  • 90 Degree Elbows - 5 pieces
  • Tees - 1 piece
  • Unions - 2 piece
  • 45 Degree Elbows - 2 pieces
Rod Holder Section - This is for one rod holder. You will have to multiple the amount by the number of rod holders you want on your rocket launcher.

There are couple of different stakeout pole or shallow water anchor options.  I made a video showing how to make on yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY-3dra4Uvc

Here's a DIY stakeout pole kit you can buy that comes with everything you need to build it.  The price is pretty decent, but you will have to pay for shipping.
